The Tech-First Executive
Most auto CEOs rise through the ranks of finance or mechanical engineering. Karl Thomas Neumann came from electronics. As the CEO of Continental AG, he understood early on that the future of the car wasn't in the pistons, but in the code. He transformed the tire maker into a global powerhouse for automotive electronics and sensors.
Making Opel Cool Again
Neumann is perhaps best known for his tenure as CEO of Opel (then a GM subsidiary). He launched the famous "Umparken im Kopf" (Repark Your Mind) campaign, successfully challenging the public's negative perception of the brand. He was instrumental in launching the Opel Ampera-e, the European twin of the Chevy Bolt, proving that a traditional mass-market brand could build a credible electric car.
The Startup Pivot
When GM sold Opel to PSA (now Stellantis), Neumann famously stepped down, reportedly because he believed the future lay in pure electric mobility, not in merging legacy giants. True to his word, he moved to California to join Canoo as an executive and board member, reuniting with Stefan Krause and Ulrich Kranz. Today, "KTN" remains a prolific investor and voice in the industry, arguing that the era of the traditional carmaker is ending and the era of the "mobility provider" has begun.
