The Chemist Tycoon
Wang Chuanfu (born 1966) is not a typical car guy; he is a scientist. Born into poverty in rural Anhui, he studied physical chemistry and metallurgy. He founded BYD in 1995, not to make cars, but to break the Japanese monopoly on rechargeable batteries. By the early 2000s, he was supplying half the world's cellphone batteries.
The Buffett Bet
Wang's genius lies in vertical integration. He realized that if he could make the best batteries, he could make the best electric cars. This vision impressed Charlie Munger, who convinced Warren Buffett to invest in BYD in 2008. Munger famously described Wang as "a combination of Thomas Edison and Jack Welch"âsomeone who could invent the technology and run the business.
The Blade Revolution
Under Wang's leadership, BYD developed the revolutionary Blade Battery, an LFP pack that is safer and cheaper than competitors'. Because BYD manufactures almost every component in-houseâfrom semiconductor chips to the batteriesâWang navigated global supply chain crises better than anyone, propelling BYD to challenge Tesla for the global EV crown.
